Biscom Provides Linux-based Translation
Server
CHELMSFORD, MA, (April 22, 2004) - Today, Lincoln & Co,
a leading provider of file conversion and viewing technologies,
and a division of Biscom, Inc., announced ConServRTM
for Linux, a version of its high-performance file conversion
product, ConServR, on the Linux operating system.
Previously offered only on a Microsoft Windows 2000
platform, ConServR is the world’s first and only enterprise-class
file conversion engine that is capable of rapidly rendering
large numbers of documents from application-specific
formats including Office, HTML, PostScript, and PCL
into formats that are not device or application specific,
such as TIFF, PDF and text. Furthermore, the ConServR
for Linux Software Development Kit (SDK) enables developers
to integrate ConServR with other applications that
are written in popular languages such as C, C++ and
Java.
File format conversion has typically been the responsibility
of desktop PC users, who must ensure that the files
they share with others are in a format that can be
read by the other users. Because not all PCs have access
to the same desktop applications, and few have the
necessary file conversion application installed, concern
about whether the file is in a readable format posed
a problem for users who needed to collaborate. ConServR
for Linux solves this problem by relieving the PC user
of this burden and providing file conversion as a network-based
service.
ConServR for Linux is also a boon to organizations
who need to communicate documents on devices that cannot
handle PC applications including PDAs, cell phones,
thin-clients with Web browsers, and fax machines. It
ensures that files can be accessed by desktop users
who are running different operating systems, such as
Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac OS. ConServR for Linux
also improves data security by converting files into
formats that are less likely to contain worms or viruses.
ConServR for Linux is a high-performance system that
is capable of processing many file conversions rapidly
and in parallel. It was designed to handle the demands
of the production, transaction-oriented applications
found in large enterprises. For example, a large financial
services firm could use ConServR to render archived
statements stored in PCL printer formats for viewing
via the firm's Web portal.
A full-featured SDK is provided with ConServR for
Linux that includes Application Program Interfaces
(APIs) for C, C++ and Java.
ConServR for Linux ships on May 3, 2004.
