roadBiscom and mindSHIFT Technologies kicked off an 8 city ILTA sponsored roadshow last week
focusing on the challenges legal IT faces with the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend – the growing use of attorney personal mobile devices to conduct firm business and challenges facing legal IT to manage these devices and prevent breach of confidential client data.  The sessions were hosted by Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor in Wilmington, DE and Rosenberg Martin Greenberg in Baltimore, MD.  A total of 10 law firms and 2 corporate law departments were represented.  The session covered the following topics:

  • General security threats associated with using personal mobile devices in a legal environment, including data breach of confidential client data and noncompliance with government regulations.
  • Best practices for managing usage of firm supplied and personal mobile devices.
  • Overview of mobile device management technologies.
  • Presentation of the latest trends for law firm BYOD strategies and mobile device management technology deployment.

Clearly the BYOD issue is top of mind with legal IT and the presentation generated lively debate regarding the challenges of managing mobile devices from competing vendors with diverse operating systems and security environments.  In general the attendees confirmed that while legal IT is required to support attorney personal devices they are just beginning to develop firm policies regarding sanctioned usage and evaluate mobile device management technologies to control attorney access to firm data, provision firm authorized applications and enforce security policies.  Only a couple of the firms attending have deployed MDM, and primarily for central provisioning of firm supported apps and to provide remote wipe in the event of a lost or stolen device.  So clearly legal IT is in the early adaptor stage of deploying technologies to support the BYOD trend.  Biscom will be formally surveying attendees of upcoming roadshows and will be presenting findings in a future blog post, so stay tuned.

Here is the schedule for the BYOD roadshow.  Please access the ILTA website webinar page to register for a roadshow in your location.  I look forward to seeing you there.
